The Nine of Cups portrays the moment of joy when Psyche is rescued from the darkness of the underworld and reunited with Eros. Psyche and Eros stand face to face embracing, aarlanded with flowers, on a rock rising from the sea. Each holds a golden cup. Beside diem Aphrodite stands benignly, raising a cup in blessing on their union. Below them, are six golden cups carefully stacked in celebration of the restored lovers.
Minor Arcana ~ The Nine of Cups
The Nine of Cups is the wish-card, representing satisfaction and the fulfilment of an emotional dream. Psyche and Eros are at last reunited in honest love for each other, standing face to face. Each has betrayed the other; each knows on a profound level who the partner is; and they have understood and forgiven each other. Because of this, the capricious Aphrodite blesses the union, for the power of unconditional human love can sway even the gods. This ecstatic moment of fulfilment, unlike the initial celebration of the Three of Cups, has been truly earned, not by force or will or emotional manipulation, or the covert bullying of loudly announced self-sacrifice, but by the steady inner commitment of the only mortal in the story. Throughout, Psyche has done what she has done through loyalty to her own feeling. Thus she has earned the right to claim her divine husband and puts even the gods to shame.
This second meeting is the real marriage of Eros and Psyche, suggesting what such a union can be. It arises not out of falling in love but from a commitment to loving including resentment, betrayal, separation, despair and readiness to give it up if required. This is rare, for the journey of the Cups is not about falling in love and living happily ever after, and then walking away when the beloved proves to be a disappointment. It is really an inner journey toward a commitment to one’s own feeling values, and thus is an inner as well as an outer union.
On a divinatory level, the Nine of Cups heralds a time of pleasure and satisfaction, and the fulfilment of a cherished wish. It represents the reward for efforts made, and the validation of one’s commitment.
