The card of the Three of Pentacles portrays Daedalus standing on a raised platform or dais, still clothed in his ochre tunic and leather apron. Three Athenians stand before him, dressed in subtle but rich robes. Each offers him a golden pentade. Around the four men, vines hang laden on a trellis, and a background of green hills can be seen against a clear blue sky.
Minor Arcana ~ The Three of Pentacles
The Three of Pentacles, in common with the other Threes in the Minor Arcana, implies an initial completion, and here we see Daedalus receiving the early rewards for his labours. The initial completion here represents the first stages of concretization of a project, rather like the completed shell of a building before any internal structures or decoration have beer‘developed. Daedalus has achieved a firm position at the beginning of his career, although it remains to be seen whether he can strengthen this position and make it permanent. As we know from the myth he cannot. Thus the initial completion of the Three of Pentacles is not the final stage of a project. There may be hard work, difficulty and nsk before one can count oneself materially secure.
There is cause for celebration in the Three of Pentacles, but this celebration should be taken with a full awareness of the work to come. In the story of Daedalus, the factor which causes the collapse of this early success is not a material one, but a flaw in the character of the man himself This also needs to be considered when we evaluate the meaning of the numbered cards in the Suit of Pentacles, for the material rewards which this Suit promises are contingent not only upon shrewd business skills and willingness to work hard, but also upon character. An individual's inability to know his own limits, or his belief that he can do whatever he pleases in the material world regardless of the consequences to others, is often the fatal flaw which eventually leads to the collapse of the early success indicated by the Three. Therefore the message of this card is: Enjoy the early fruits of your labours, but consider the future, not only in terms of the work which must be done, but in terms of your own capacity to handle it.
On a divinatory level, the Three of Pentacles heralds a time of early success in some material endeavour. A project may earn profits, or a creative venture such as a book may show early success in the market. But as with all the Threes, this is not a final resolution, but a stage which will hopefully lead through hard work and difficulty to a more permanent reward.
